Centenary Celebration Dinner at Eaves Hall on the 2nd November

Blackburn Northern rounded off its centenary year with a celebration dinner held at Eaves Hall. There were 115 members and guests in attendance to mark this very special occasion.

Guests travelled from all over the UK to attend the celebration, which reflects the deep affection everyone has for the Club. The event was organised by Julie Marsden, the President’s wife.

On arrival, guests were welcomed by a piper and received the red carpet treatment before enjoying a pre-dinner reception whilst listening to live jazz music. They were mystified by a sleight of hand artiste and also enjoyed tricks performed with a diabolo.

Dave Bell, Master of Ceremonies, rang a magnificent large brass hand bell to call guests to dinner. The “bell ringing” continued at intervals throughout the meal as Dave ensured that the evening ran smoothly.

Nick Marsden, the President, gave a short welcome address before dinner and thanked sponsors for their generous contributions. A budding young pianist provided background music during the meal.

During a short break, the President announced that Ian Broughton, Treasurer had been awarded honorary life membership for his services to the Club. This took Ian completely by surprise. There was warm applause from all the guests.

Guests were delighted when a stunning cake, complete with 100 blazing candles, was carried to the President’s table accompanied by the piper playing in full traditional dress. Guests were on their feet and applauded enthusiastically as the cake made its way across the dining room.

After dinner, guests were treated to more live music and enjoyed a sprinkling of “Strictly Come Dancing”, courtesy of professional dancers. An ice dancer provided a touch of glitz and glamour with an artistic skating routine.

Celebrations continued until the early hours.
